Dishing up design
Dahleas, a brand-new Braamfontein eatery, serves up more than just good food, good coffee and a good vibe. Here you’ll get a generous helping of design awesomeness too!
The black and white logo, menu, take away packaging, coasters and the illustrations on Dahleas’ walls were all designed by Says Who, one of Joburg’s coolest agencies. It’s a well-considered package that proves that those days of ‘slapping together a logo’ or ‘working a grid to make a menu’ are as gone as those Justin Bieber bucks.
I asked Lauren Schultz, one half of the creative duo behind Says Who, about the black and white line drawings and the specific imagery. “We wanted to keep everything black and white to coalesce and not clash with the textures and colours within the actual restaurant: the face brick walls, steel, wood and hues of blue,” she says. “As for the subject matter of our illustrations, we didn't want anything with a specific theme: no food or typical restaurant visuals. The style is one that both Shaun Hill [the other half of Says Who] and I enjoy. We love hand rendered, black and white line work.”
Unfortunately, none of the illustrations in Daleahs are for sale – nooooo! But fortunately, Says Who takes on commissions and you can also invest in some of Lauren and Shaun’s personal work – yesssss! Check them out here. And of course, go eat, drink and look at stuff at Daleahs – 6 De Beer street, Braamfontein – yes, go!
