The SkyRoomLive experience
A late Saturday afternoon. From the roof top of the Lister Medical building on the corner of Bree and Kruis, taxis, cars and pedestrians look like miniatures. Their noise absorbed into a low-level buzz. The sun sets slowly behind the Jozi skyline and the city lights up. On a stage, Cama Gwini is rocking it out soulfully in a black leather outfit with gold details (like!).
Things are happening on the roof tops of Joburg skyscrapers – parties, movies, concerts... And one of the coolest of these may just be this one, the home of SkyRoomLive.com. The latter is described as South Africa’s most popular live-streaming online portal.
In fact, SkyRoomLive.com – the brain-child of Mushroom Broadcast – has racked up almost 1 700 000 live views for big brands and concerts for HHP, The Parlotones, Jack Parow, The Kongos and more. It is the only South African live-stream portal to be rated in the top 50 worldwide.
Sessions for the portal are recorded and streamed live from this Johannesburg skyscraper and we were part of the audience on this evening. Being on a roof in Joburg with a pretty impressive view of the city and listening to cool sounds with fires going in braziers, what’s not to love? Plus there's a foosball table – yay!
Just being there made me happy. It also made me wonder about the (my) fascination with roof tops and frighteningly, whether it’s a ‘hipster’ trend. But it doesn’t matter – it is a trend I’m happy to be part of.
