Go check out The Hill
Along with justice and history, I heard that delicious food is now being dished up at Constitution Hill in Braamfontein. So the other day, I dragged my brother with to go check out The Hill. This restaurant / cafe opened a few months ago.
The restaurant used to be the warden’s house and is situated in a prison courtyard. There are even some built-in chess tables and a ping pong table outside, which I think are pretty cool.
The warm chickpea, aubergine, broccoli and bulgur wheat salad (see, I'm still on those new year's resolutions vibe). Next time, I’m having the homemade ricotta or the sweetpotato pancakes or the artichoke, mushroom and potato pie... The brother gave the BLT sandwich the thumbs up.
Our waiter, Basimane showed me the restaurant’s vegetable and herb garden, proving that you don’t need a lot of space or a traditional garden to grow your own. Basimane said that the restaurant also bakes it own bread and makes its own pasta.
I almost missed this (and it's not the best photo either), but love it! It says: “Let there be justice for all. Let there be peace. Let there be work, bread, water and salt for all.” Yes! You can contact the restaurant on 011 339 1005.
After you've eaten, go explore the ramparts of the old fort (it's free). This is the brother doing what it takes to get the perfect shot of Hillbrow (it's the older sister's job to get shots like this). And here's some more random Constitution Hill photos...
