My new coffee 'local'

You know those run-off-the-mill-looking line-ups of retail spaces usually somewhere in older neighbourhoods… Those 1970s-type buildings that you eventually don’t even register anymore. There is one like that on Arkansas street in Berario, walking distance from where I live. It used to be pretty humdrum with dry cleaners, a pub and a 'pavement' antique store.

But during the past year or so, it got some new tenants: a shop specialising in custom chocolates and sweets, a décor store and an art classes place. And about a month ago, Butter, The Bake Shop opened (look out for the post box outside).

My super-awesome friend, Michelle and I went to check it out this past weekend. Here’s the lowdown:

The ambiance: Butter is a laid-back eatery – and the décor adds to this with recycled pallets used as frames, enamel buckets painted bright-red as light fittings, some Bean There coffee bags above the window, mannequins on the tables instead of cheesy flowers and pics from the colourful village of Burano in Italy for sommer apparently. Oh, and Steve Tyrell was playing in the background (thanks Michelle for educating me).

The menu: The menu includes a range of cakes (all baked in store), as well as bread baked by a friend of Janie Visser, the owner. Light meal options are written on a black board and always includes a dough/pastry element, she says.

On the day we were there, you could have spinach and feta phyllo pie, chorizo frittata with fresh tomato sauce, bacon sweet corn and roasted pepper quiche, and chicken pie. We opted for cheesecake topped with caramel and walnuts and coffee (they only offer fair-trade Bean There coffee).

The high: Can you say cheesecake! And coffee! And the service was awesome. Plus it could have easily been very tannie but it was not. Afterwards, we checked out the chocolate shop, called Red Rainbow, and I got these ‘chocolate bombs’ for hot chocolate later.

The verdict: If you need a break, a good cup of coffee and some delicious cake (or a light meal), this is a great place! Added extra: a view of the Northcliff ridge, said to be one of the highest points in Joburg.
