Luxury spa in Selby (yes really!)

I’m not the girliest of girls but said ‘yes!’ when I recently got the chance to visit the Pyramid Day Spa because:

1. I’ve got a thing for the unexpected and a spa in Selby, an industrial area in the south of Joburg, is just that, especially one that is a 2014 World Luxury Spa award nominee.

2. The spa is part of the popular Pyramid Conference Centre, which has a pyramid (well, a pyramid facade). My dad used to work close to this part of town, so I’ve been wondering about that pyramid for years...

3. It’s participating in the Joburg City Festival, which is happening from 25 to 31 August, with a seriously good special! Just R200 for a 45-minute full body massage and you get full use of the facilities, including the steam room, jacuzzi and the relaxation area. Check out the cool festival programme here.

4. Sometimes we all need some TLC, even the not-so-girly-girls.

Look and feel: The spa’s interior has Arabic influences but not in a cheesy or over the top way. Think: lush textured wallpapers, velvety fabrics in rich turquoises and purples and pretty lights. In fact, it won the Best of the Best award for its design in 2011. The atmosphere is relaxed - and you can’t help but to follow suit.

On offer: Winner of the Les Nouvelles Esthétiques Day Spa of 2011, the Pyramid has a range of professional treatments – from manicures to wraps and massages to facials. And it offers various luxurious packages and products too.

The restaurant menu includes pitas, wraps, salads and sushi. Some of the treatments even include a meal. What’s more the spa is open seven days a week (until 7pm in the week) and now also has its own beauty school.

The highlight: The attention to detail! The spa called to check my gown and shoe size before my appointment and a locker with my name on it was waiting for me in the beautiful dressing room (above). I had the Joburg City Festival special – and my therapist, Portia was just amazing.

The verdict: If you need some ‘me time’ and want to experience one of the Joburg CBD’s best surprises, make that booking. And if you do so during the Joburg City Festival, go have dinner, check out a performance, do some shopping etc. in town too.
