Fables & Other Stories

If you have a thing for prints, this is the last week that you can see Fiona Pole’s Fables & Other Stories exhibition at Gallery AOP in 44 Stanley, Johannesburg. It’s all about stories and fairytales, so expect foxes, wolves and bears (yes!), among other universal symbols.

Here’s a bit more info from the exhibition catalogue (more here):
“Pole has drawn extensively on literary works when she made these. Chiefly, are the French fairy tales with which she became very familiar, reading them to her two children when she and her family still lived in Paris.”

But of course, it also goes deeper than that. Fiona doesn’t want to share too much about the meaning of the works; she’d rather leave it up to the viewer to make up his or her own stories. I think that’s good motivation to go have a closer look at these delicate, understated prints, which have all been done on a printing press that’s over 200-years-old!
