If you haven’t been to the ZOO group exhibition at NIROXprojects in Maboneng yet, go! It is conceptually strong and has that undeniable cool factor.
The show is based on Lauren Beukes’ novel, Zoo City. Joburg forms the backdrop of this science fiction story in which those who have committed a crime are paired with animal familiars. This pairing is called being ‘animalled’. There’s a cool plot too, of course, featuring a protagonist paired with a sloth. I haven’t read the book but after checking it out online and visiting the exhibition, it’s totally on my to-do list.
For the exhibition, established and emerging artists interpreted the word ‘zoo’ within the theme of Zoo City in various ways, but like I said, go check it out! It’s on until the 15th when Maboneng closes but open again in the New Year.
